Welcome to the Bükk Region UNESCO Global Geopark
Discover an extraordinary landscape where complex geological forces, abundant karst wonders and deep-rooted human history intertwine. The Bükk Region UNESCO Global Geopark is a living showcase of Earth's history and a proud testament to the rich natural and cultural heritage of Hungary.
About the Geopark
Spanning an impressive 2,817 km², the Bükk Region UNESCO Global Geopark unites 109 settlements across the Bükk Mountains, the Uppony Mountains, and their surrounding foothills. As Hungary's third UNESCO Global Geopark, it encompasses one of the most geologically complex and diverse areas of the country.
Geological Heritage
The Geopark’s rocks tell a profound story spanning hundreds of millions of years—from the Paleozoic era (Ordovician period) to the Jurassic. The mountains feature a fascinating folded and overthrust (nappe) tectonic structure shaped during the Cretaceous period.
The distinctive visage of the Bükk Region is defined by its iconic Triassic white and light-grey limestone, alongside exceptional Jurassic pillow lavas formed by ancient deep-sea volcanism around Szarvaskő, and spectacular Miocene volcanic tuffs.
The region is heavily characterized by its dynamic karstic landforms, featuring expansive karrenfields, dolines, sinkholes, and a deep-seated thermal karst system that supplies vital thermal springs and a strategic drinking water base.
Nature & Cultural Experiences
Visitors to the Bükk Region can explore a wealth of natural and cultural treasures. The Geopark is Hungary's richest area for caves, boasting internationally significant Paleolithic "caveman caves"—such as the Szeleta, Suba-lyuk, and Istállós-kő caves—which served as vital shelters for prehistoric humans.
Beyond its prehistoric roots, the landscape is dotted with relics of centuries-old mining and industrial history, including ancient bloomery furnaces and glassworks. The journey culminates in the unique "stone culture" of the Bükk Foothills (Bükkalja), famous for its enigmatic carved beehive stones (kaptárkövek).
